Campari is an Italian aperitif that was created in 1860. An aperitif is an alcoholic beverage that stimulates ones appetite before a meal. This particular cocktail may look sweet, but is not, as it contains a bitter liqueur.  Campari is used in many cocktail concoctions.  In fact, it is wonderful simply on its own with soda and a twist.  It works well when combined with sweet spirits (like Sweet Vermouth) as the two ingredients tend to balance each other out in cocktails.

Tanqueray Gin had its start in the 1830s in London. It was one of the first distilleries to create what we now know as dry gin. Dry gin results in a more crisp flavor than traditional gins because traditional gins used lots of sugars to hide imperfections in the gin due to the distillation process. Today, with second distillations of gins that include additional herbs and citrus flavors (like Tanqueray 10), there is a wide range of gins available in the marketplace.

Noilly Prat also had its start in the early to mid 1800’s. The company started in Southern France with the inspiration from wine aging techniques. Vermouth was originally created for medicinal purposes, believing it was helpful for stomach conditions. Today it is used for countless cocktail creations.

As the Negroni is one of the easiest to order when you are out on the town (it's hard to mess up equal portions of the three ingredients!), it is a classic drink everyone should be able to make with basic spirits that they have on hand in their home bar. It is also lovely to make this drink in a beautiful glass, and we think our Iron Gate rocks glass (available online) is a real winner!  And measuring from our 1920's-inspired Penguin of "oz." Pewter Jigger makes it even more special.
